What you get
When your project is connected with Add to Slack or Add to Discord, linking your chat account lets you:
- approve or request changes straight from a chat message;
- add tasks and see your own tasks with the
/taskshirecommands (and, in Slack, Create a task from any message); - get @mentioned when an update is about you, for example when work is assigned to you or waiting for your sign-off.
Linking works for Slack and Discord. Microsoft Teams and Google Chat don’t need it: their buttons open Taskshire, where you’re already signed in.
How to link
- In Taskshire, select your name at the top right, then Notification preferences.
- Scroll down to Chat accounts.
- Select Link a Slack account or Link a Discord account.
- Sign in to Slack or Discord if you’re asked to.
- Slack: check the workspace name at the top right is the right one, then select Allow (or Continue).
- Discord: check it’s your account, then select Authorise.
- You’re taken back to your notification settings. Your account is listed under Chat accounts.
In Slack, you can also type /taskshire link. In Discord, /taskshire help shows a button to link.
You only link once:
- Slack: once for each workspace. If your company has more than one Slack workspace, link each one you use.
- Discord: once covers every server.
If you don’t see Chat accounts, the Slack and Discord apps aren’t set up on your Taskshire yet. Ask a project admin.
Is it safe?
Yes.
- It proves it’s you. Taskshire only links an account after you sign in to Slack or Discord. Nobody can link your Taskshire account to someone else’s chat account, or theirs to yours.
- You keep your normal permissions. Anything you do from chat runs as you, through the same checks as in Taskshire. If you can’t approve something in Taskshire, you can’t approve it from chat either.
- It only shares who you are. Linking tells Taskshire your Slack or Discord user ID and name. It doesn’t give Taskshire your password or let it read your messages.
- One account, one person. Each chat account links to one Taskshire person. If you link again, the new link replaces the old one.
- You can unlink at any time. Under Chat accounts, select Unlink. From then on, actions from that chat account don’t act as you.
What if I press Approve before linking?
Nothing changes in Taskshire. Instead, Slack or Discord shows you a private message (only you can see it) with a button to link your account. Link it, go back to the message and press Approve again.
The same happens if you use a /taskshire command before linking.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happened when I pressed Approve
- Check you linked your account in the same Slack workspace as the message.
- Check you’re allowed to approve at that stage in Taskshire. Chat tells you privately if you’re not.
- Someone else may have approved it first. Open the task to check.
I don’t get @mentioned
Mentions only happen in channels connected with Add to Slack or Add to Discord, not with a webhook link. In Slack, you also need to have linked your account in that workspace.
I linked the wrong account
Select Unlink under Chat accounts. Then link again while signed in to the right account. In Slack, check the workspace name at the top right of the sign-in page.
I want updates in a different channel
That’s set up by a project admin. See I want to change the channel.
